rTMS Q & A

What is rTMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a cutting-edge procedure used to treat depression as well as several other conditions. It involves briefly delivering magnetic fields through your scalp and skull and into the outer layers of your brain. Those brief pulses stimulate the neurons in your brain that regulate your mood.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) uses repetitive, brief pulses that create a magnetic field in the outer layers of the brain.

Conventional rTMS therapy is delivered through magnetic coils that can be flat, figure eight shaped, helical, or clam shaped. The process is fast and doesn't affect your hair or skin. This approach is usually offered in conjunction with medication to maximize results.

What kind of equipment is used for rTMS therapy?

Advanced Mental Health Care was one of the first sites in the nation to offer TMS. It is currently one of only a few facilities that can provide this innovative treatment with three different types of equipment:

  • Magstim rTMS
  • NeurostarⓇ rTMS (Neurostar manufactured the first FDA-approved TMS coil)
  • BrainswayTM dTMS (used for deep TMS therapy)

During your initial consultation, your physician will determine which option is best for your individualized treatment path.

What conditions can rTMS treat?

Ongoing research suggests that rTMS may offer significant benefits for many other conditions. At Advanced Mental Health Care, rTMS has proven to be an effective therapy for hundreds of patients who suffer from treatment-resistant depression.

He often recommends rTMS as a treatment option for men and women who suffer from various psychological and neurological conditions, including:

  • Compulsions
  • Obsessions
  • Addiction
